Sock a Day Keeps the Doctor Away - Or Not

Did you know that something as basic as wearing socks can have a big impact on your health?

The cushioning and the structure of footwear can, over time, hinder us from activating particular muscle groups that could strengthen the body; however, being barefoot restores normal gait. This is something that orthopaedic doctors explain. There are many prejudices about walking with bare feet, but in fact our ancestors did it before the invention of shoes: it is therefore a natural action.

First of all, walking barefoot is good for your feet and legs. Many footwear, namely, greatly limit the movement of some muscles, which eventually atrophy and hurt.

Circulation

The lower extremities, particularly the legs and feet, contain a dense network of veins and arteries. Because of their location so close to the lower extremities, the feet receive a disproportionately large amount of oxygenated blood from the heart whenever it pumps.

Muscles

However, when you walk barefoot, all muscles are properly stimulated and strengthened: this leads to improved blood circulation. In addition, the soles of the feet receive a natural reflexogenic massage. If we are afraid that pebbles, twigs, grass stalks and other small obstacles could hurt us, don't worry: after a little "training" protective blisters will form under the soles of our feet and the ground will no longer be a hindrance to us.

Blisters and Infections

The blisters will also protect us from micro-wounds and small scratches that could result from the presence of bumps in the ground. Even the risk of contracting a fungus or infection while walking barefoot should not scare us, because the opposite happens: our feet, protected from the moisture that can form in shoes, are better protected against mycosis. When walking with bare feet, the feet are relatively drier because the sweat dries faster in contact with the air.

Fact!

In reality, in contact with the colder floor, our body regulates its temperature, and this has a double advantage: on the one hand, blood circulation improves, on the other hand - what is interesting in the summer season - our body will lower its temperature and we will feel less hot .

Finally, we also undermine the false belief that walking with bare feet makes us sick because the ground is cold. We tell our children to always wear shoes or footwear and never walk barefoot, otherwise they will catch a cold.

The only thing that needs to be watched out for, at least in the beginning, is the passage of time: we start with only a few minutes at a time so that the feet and legs can become used to the new walk. Even if we only devote a quarter of an hour to familiarizing ourselves with a new routine when we are at home each day, this is ample time.

Sleeping

Walking barefoot outside is part of what is called grounding, which is when you make contact with the earth's surface electrons.

Children

The ability of our legs and feet to propel our body forward is unaffected by whether or not we are wearing shoes. while people reach adulthood, one of the reasons they develop foot problems could be that they wore their shoes too much while they were children. Scientists have recently arrived at the conclusion that wearing shoes, particularly shoes with closed toes, may be critical in the process of developing a healthy foot. Dropped feet are commonly related with wearing shoes too early in childhood, and this is one of the reasons why.
